3-Step Formula to Introduce Yourself in Meetings (like you belong there)
Got no idea where to start? Start here:
“Ok so, let’s go round the table and introduce ourselves”.
If this is when you think “Aw sh*t”, you’re not alone.
It can feel awkward1 talking about ourselves.
Especially in work meetings, with total strangers, in a second language.
The same old questions bounce around our heads:
Where do I start?
What do I include?
Well, we’ve got answers!
Many communication coaches recommend using the Present → Past → Future formula:
First, you start with the present.
Then, you mention the past.
Finally, ending with the near future.
It works because it gives you structure.
The structure gives you clarity.
This clarity gives you confidence…
Step 1: The Present
Cover the basics.
Your name, position and role. Easy peasy.
Hi, everyone. My name’s _________.
For those who don’t know me, I’m __________I work as a [position] at [company].
I’m the [position] in the [department]I’m responsible for [-ing / area].
My role involves [-ing]
Step 2: The Past
Time to sell yourself a bit—Why are you at the table (or on the call)?
Mention your experience, achievements, and credentials.
I’ve been with the company for [X] years now.
I joined the company back in [month/year].I’ve gained a lot of experience [-ing].
I’ve worked on similar [projects] before.
I have a good track record [of -ing / in (area)].
Step 3: The Future
Now, let’s talk about the value you will provide to the team or project.
And end on a positive note2 .
In this project, I’ll be [working closely with the team]
I’m going to be [helping out with the financial side of things].If anyone has any issues, feel free to reach out to me or my team.
I’m looking forward to getting started.
I’m really happy to be here.
Still with me?
We’re nearly there…
Let’s see one in action:
Hi, everyone. My name’s Sarah Dawson. I work as a Senior Account Manager at Beacon Solutions and I’m responsible for managing key accounts. (Present).
I’ve been with the company for nearly 7 years now, so I have a lot of experience overseeing international projects like this one. (Past)
In this project, I’ll be working closely with the team and helping out with the financial side of things. And finally, I’m really looking forward to getting started. (Future)
Voilá.
The creative juices3 must be flowing.
Now, you’ve got a plan for your intro.
If you adapt it to each meeting (remember, not all meetings are the same)
Add a sprinkle of enthusiasm (like you really want to be there)
And practice.
You’ll make a lasting first impression — every time.
— See you in the next one.
